Falling in Love with History

Un Jan Chan giving a talk to young people recently in Kuala Lumpur

History can be boring, right?

Not so for a smart person like Jan Chan, he fell in love with History. History is full of colours for Jan Chan.

When Jan Chan started learning history in secondary school, it was love at first sight. With that first glimpse of History, he was determined to learn every single thing he could.

You may be wondering what sparked his interest in History. Even when he did not know History, he already had hundreds and thousands of questions about the past.

He was very anxiously keen to learn history to help him develop a better understanding about the past.

He asked a very interesting question during the interview we had with him, “What did the Trojan Horse do when it entered the city of Troy?”

Nobody knew so I stepped in and said, “If I remember correctly, the Greek soldiers were hiding in the Trojan Horse and when the time came all the Trojan soldiers rushed out and ambushed the city of Troy.”

Uncle Jan replied, “Correct!”

Learning History may be the hardest subject even for Jan Chan because he agrees that we need to memorise many dates, facts…and that is exactly what Jan Chan struggled with when he was in school.

He really tried but like most of us, he could not remember. But, he did not give up, you know why?

His interest for History was bigger than his problem.

And look at him – he may be an IT engineer but when you ask him any question about history, he will answer correctly without hesitation.

If you think History is boring, well I would kindly advise you to think again and you will see how interesting History is. Jan showed that to us.
