Try these couple of dishes here at Roundtable Kopitiam

By Stephen Ng

For those who love beef noodles, there is one stall here at Roundtable Kopitiam that you should try in Kepong.

Although it is nothing to shout about, it's rare for us to find a stall that sells good dishes with beef in Kepong, but this one is operated by a couple, Tiow Miaw Ling and his wife, who hail from Miri. You should try it yourself, and appreciate their beef noodle on its own merits. Their stall is known as Hainanese Beef Noodle.

My favourite is still the Seremban beef noodles at the wet market. I have written about them in the Star papers a number of years ago. From as early as the 50s, my mother and my aunts used to quietly eat there. Grandma was a stauch Taoist.

Others, like a 10-year-old student in my creative writing class, wrote that he 'found' his 'love at first sight' with the beef noodles at Do Do Do Restaurant in Muar. To each, his own preference.

The other favourite dish of mine is, of course, curry noodle or better known as 'laksa'. For a bowl costing RM7.50, with so many different ingredients, the price is reasonable.

Of course, I cannot compare this to the RM4 a bowl Penang curry mee found at Lim's Sisters in Sri Segambut which is also around Kepong and easily accessible to day trippers. That one has its own followers.

But, just a word of caution to everyone who loves beef noodles and curry mee, eat in moderation. And, like I always do: avoid any stalls that use artificial food seasoning. It may make the food taste good, but it's not healthy.
