Jake's Curious Machine

By Mira Kow

It was a lovely day to be outside. The skies were a shade of blue, and the sun was shining brightly. Many families were outside having a picnic, while Jake was in his own laboratory, tinkering away at his new creation.

Recently, Jake had been trying to make his time machine work. It was tricky, but he never gave up. He even spent days without eating much, which worried his sister. After months of hard work, he was almost done with the time machine.

The man inserted the final piece of chip . With that, the time machine came alive! He was still busy admiring his invention when his sister, Jenica showed up in his Laboratory.

“Hey Jake, still working on that time machine?” asked Jenica, teasingly, “You had better get some rest or else you will start to look like a panda, I’m sure no one would like to have a panda as their famous scientist.”

“Oh, it’s you,” Jake sighed, “I’ve told you a million times to knock before coming in, and yet you still won’t listen.”

Jenica loved to see her brother’s latest inventions. And, although Jake would admit that his sister could be a little annoying at times, she was good company indeed.

“I did knock," Jenica half protested, with a shrug. "Guess you were too busy with your creation to hear me, I’ve got some food, would you like some?”

“No thanks, I have to try this time machine to see if it works,” answered Jake.

Upon hearing that, Jenica’s eyes lit up. Jake knew this face too well; his sister was excited and wanted to try out his time machine.

“You’re done with the machine?” asked Jenica, “You have no idea how long I have been waiting for you to finish this!”

Jake chuckled at her sister’s face. Her sister looked like a cute puppy who was excited for a meal.

Jenica stepped into the machine and observed its interior. “Let me see…” Jenica’s fingers playfully pressed a blue button and started to insert a time period.. Jake was shocked. He tried to stop Jenica, but it was too late. The time machine was already moving.

In a blinding flash, they found themselves in a jungle, with huge trees around them. The siblings were in awe at how enormous the trees were. They decided to explore a little around the jungle, only to discover that they had travelled back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. They started to explore around.

The siblings were getting too excited and did not realise that they were straying further away from the time machine. When they wanted to go back, it was too late. They were already lost deep in the jungle. Jenica started panicking.

“Jake, what should we do?” Jenica asked frantically. Before Jake could reply, they heard a giant roar behind them. They trembled and slowly turned around.

A giant Tyrannosaurus was behind them! It looked like it was ready to gobble them up for lunch. Jenica screamed and started to run. Jake ran for his life too.

d It was a long chase. The dinosaur did not give up easily. It must have been very hungry. Fortunately, it got tired from the chase, so it decided to walk away. The siblings were relieved.

They decided to rest at a small pond nearby. Jenica scraped her knee so Jake treated the wound. He used water to wash off blood from the wound and a leaf to wrap it up. Jenica was grateful to have such a caring brother.

“Thank you for taking care of me, Jake,” Jenica said in a small voice.

“Don’t mention it,” replied Jake.

It was getting dark, so they decided to rest under a tree. They laughed as they reminisced their childhood memories before they dozed off peacefully.

The next day, they tried to looked around for the time machine. Their eyes brightened up, when they finally found the machine where it had first landed!

Finally, the siblings were securely seated in the time machine. Jake pressed a red button. In a bright flash, they found themselves back in the laboratory. They heaved a sigh of relief.

“I’m never going back there ever again!” Jenica swore.

“Says the one who activated the time machine,” Jake muttered under his breath.

Jenica gave him an angry glare before stomping out of the laboratory.
