John and The Giant Serpent

By Ethan Kuan

Two light years ago, there was a planet named Ompana. There lived 99990 Ompanians in Ompana.

John was a young man who was 25 years old. He was six-foot tall and handsome. His parents passed away in the 1990s. He worked for a company that searched for myths that were thought to be fake but they turned out to be true.

The latest research was about Koilek, a giant serpent wreaking havoc in Ompana. He was found roaming in the jungle, eating Ompanians at the rate of 10% Ompanians every month!

“If we do not do anything about the giant serpent, in just another seven months, we will all be dead!” Chief Ompanian Oney warned. His voice cracked as he spoke. Within just a short span, he had lost two of his best childhood friends.

“Yes, we must kill the serpent!” the chief’s son, Ompanian Googy shouted. “How can we continue living like this? Many of us are so terrified that we would not even venture out of our own homes for the past two months.”

The Supreme Council decided to ask John to go on a mission to hunt for Koilek. John agreed.

Preparing himself for the task ahead, John went into the weapons room and took an armour and a grappling hook that was acid resistant, a bow and a few magical arrows just in case.

John started his journey early the next morning when all his friends were still sleeping soundly. There were long body giraffes, flying elephants, invisible rabbits but Koilek was nowhere to be found.

When John was about to give up he saw a trail of acid on the ground. “This must be the serpent’s saliva,” he thought to himself.

At the end of the acid trail, there stood the serpent. There were flashes of lightning and peals of thunder around the beast. He was at least 200 metres long, with two long fangs, five-layered skin, two venomous glands and two big eyes that looked like fireballs.

“You make a great meal for me, Boy!” Koilek thundered, as he slithered towards John and was ready to strike.

But, it was too late. John had already shot his grappling hook and swung around from tree to tree, looking at the serpent which was still puzzled with John’s latest act.

Standing just two meters away from Koilek, John spoke to the serpent in Koilek’s own language. Koilek was surprised that John was able to speak his mother tongue fluently. No human species before this had tried to learn his language.

“Why are you attacking this planet?” John asked.

“In the 1950s there was no technology, but weapons were more deadly. My species was once living peacefully in this jungle until your species camem” Koilek replied.

“And?” John asked curiously. “Your species killed all my species for our skin. I managed to get away before they got me. I wanted revenge so that is why I harmed your species,” he replied sadly.

Koilek could not hold back his tears as he started thinking about his Uncle Jacko, Auntie Juliet, and his little brother, Koison. Both of Koilet’s parents were also killed and their skin turned into handbags.

Realizing that the serpent was remorseful for harming the human raice, John thought for a while, before making a deal with Koilek, “How about this? You will go to the middle of the city and apologize to my species; we will also apologize to you then. We will have peace once more and we will share our food with you.”

The serpent agreed and that was what happened in Ompana.
