It is a small shop.

But still, May May Ais Kacang at Jalan Bangau 1, Kepong Baru has the potential to attract any ice kacang enthusiasts.

It is, in fact, hidden at a corner of the wet market in Kepong Baru, and unless you have visited the market, you would not find it.

The shop has changed owners since the original owner started operating the business 40 years ago, and the current owners have been running it for at least 20 years.

It has one of my best Char Kuey Teow in town. The uncle who fried the kuey teow is the father of the operator, a 56-year-old Uncle Wong Kim Thin.

My mother, brother and I unanimously agreed that Uncle Kim Tin’s Char Kway Teow is something that everyone should try. Being a fan of this local cuisine myself, I think it has to be simply the best. Mum said that it has the 'wor hei' a new Cantonese word that I learn.

They also have Fried Chee Cheong Fun, Curry Cheong Fun, Fried Loh See Fun, and a few other dishes which we did not manage to try out.

What is unique about this place is it offers quite a variety of ice kacang – 20 different flavours to be precise – as well as some good local cuisine.

Its operator, Wong Wai Heong has been operating this shop himself for over 10 years.

The 28-year-old uses fruits and gula Melaka to add to the different tastes from the typical ice kacang you can get elsewhere. It is not new, but having a shop with all the different varieties makes this place an attraction for the whole family.

Shared between four of us in the family, we tried out their Signature ABC, their ABC which comes with ice cream topping, but my father still prefers their Durian Ice Kacang. You can also ask them to add less gula Melaka syrup.

As this area is also the wet market in the morning, there are two shoplots just diagonally opposite each other which sell lots of both local and imported fruits. There are also shops selling frozen ingredients that you can buy for your steamboat all within walking distance. Unless you are planning to do marketing here in Kepong Baru, avoid going to the area in the morning.

For day trippers to Kepong, who just want to order and enjoy their ice kacang in their cars, they can do a pre-order via Whatsapp: wa.me/+60182995776. As the road is a one-way street, it is best to wait somewhere, and once ready, just drive along Jalan Bangau 1 to pick up the orders.

You can also find housewares in a building that used to be a cinema, but has now been converted into a multipurpose complex.

And, if you stay on late enough, by about 4pm, the night market stalls will slowly be set up. By about 6pm, the pasar malam would become a busy place with lots of stalls.
