Tang Jia (唐 家)Roast in Kepong Baru is not the new kid on the block.
Although this outlet in Kepong started only in 2018, its history goes as far back nearly half a century ago, when the elder Tong Yu Sheng and his wife became well known for their roast duck at Pudu Wet Market since 1975.
Tong, who is now over 80 years old went to Yuen Long, Hong Kong in 1980 to master the art of roasting meat. Over time, he became better in the art of roasting meat, resulting in a booming roast duck, roast chicken and roast pork business.
Literally translated, Tang Jia means the Tang Family. Now, their son, Ron Tong has decided to apply his knowledge in business studies to "help his father realise his dreams to make the brand well known."
Food Review
Their range of signature dishes are their roast duck, roast chicken and roast pork that can be ordered as a whole bird or eaten alongside with a plate of rice and noodles, or served ala carte.
A favourite side dish is their Assam Mustard. For those who used to enjoy Grandma's Assam mustard, they must try this, as it is very rarely found in restaurants these days.
I particularly like their roast duck which is rich in their specially concocted sauce. For those who do not like the tough texture and putrid odour of duck meat, this one is roasted so well that gives it the tenderness and right texture that makes you crave for another piece.
The meat is fresh, as leftovers from the day's stock is sold at a discount by 5.30pm every day. This explains why the meat does not have the duck smell that puts off a lot of people.
The duck can be pre-ordered in advance, and they come with two different flavours: the Tang Jia Specialty roast duck and the Herbal roast duck, which uses Dong Quai.
Although we prefer lean pork meat, they recommended us to try the slightly more succulent roast pork. True enough, it melts in the mouth, leaving behind a lingering taste for the rest of the meal.
Their curry mee is unbeatable. It is another dish that gives my son and I the oomph, especially the fragrance from the lemon grass in the curry. This is one dish that I would strongly recommend you to try if you love curry mee.
There are many other dishes that you must try here. Since pictures paint a thousand words, I will let you see for yourself what they have.
Good Ambience
One thing about the place is that it is well-ventilated, with lots of fresh air instead of the usual airconditioning. This makes the restaurant a good place for even senior citizens to meet each other over a game of chess in the late afternoons when there are fewer customers.
The restaurant is also clean and well-lit, with posters showing their signature dishes. Overall, it gives it a great ambience for a meal together with friends.
Retirees and disabled people can also get their special discounts at Tang Jia. The nearest MRT station is Kepong Baru Station. From there, just walk towards Jalan Ambong Kiri 1. At the moment, it is only one shoplot, but orders can be made online, too.
The best time to eat the food here is in the morning when the roast meat is fresh from their central kitchen. Their breakfast and lunch crowd often packs the restaurant to the brim.
All items have to be sold off at discounted prices by 5.30pm so that customers are always assured of fresh food the next morning.
Once a week, on Charity Monday, they would designate an orphanage or old folks home to be recipients of their free packets of chicken rice. Operators of these homes can contact Tang Jia Roast at wa.me/+60168211201.
