First time meeting an Israeli man

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

By Alyson Ng

He is young. He is handsome. His name is Dan, but I call him Uncle Dan.

This is the first Israeli young man whom I have met!

He came on Zoom during our Creative Writing class and shared with us something about Israel.

What interested me the most was when he shared some of the main dishes in Israel. They are Shakshuka and Falafel.

A week later, my dad and I cooked our first dish of Shakshuka. It tasted amazing! We followed the recipe shared by this lady as it was easy to follow step by step.

First, we cut some red pepper and onion into small pieces. We didn’t have any canned tomatoes so we just blended fresh tomatoes which Mum bought from the wet market.

After we finished preparing all the ingredients, we cooked it in a frying pan over the gas stove. Next, we made a small crater using a ladle for us to put the cracked eggs in.

I made four such craters for four eggs, one each for every member in my family. After simmering for a few minutes, we came back and checked on our food to make sure if it wasn't over cooked.

Once the eggs were properly cooked, we turned off the fire. We placed the food carefully on the plates to serve the food on the dining table. This was the first time we had our Shakshuka for dinner!

There were so many other things that we learnt from Uncle Dan. For example, he told us that their national bird is hoopoe.

The thing that I also found interesting was when he told us that in Israel, the schools will accept any type of hairstyle, whereas in Malaysia, we are not allowed any hairstyle. We have school rules to follow. I guess this is what they mean when they say that Israel and Malaysia have different cultures.
